Short Tail Keywords
Short-tail keywords (also called head terms or head keywords) are broad, generic search terms typically consisting of one or two words with very high search volumes but also very high competition — for example, "shoes," "SEO," or "weight loss." While they offer massive traffic potential, they are extremely difficult to rank for and often have ambiguous user intent.
Short-tail keyword opportunities are analyzed using Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer and SEMrush's Keyword Magic Tool, which show search volume, keyword difficulty, and SERP competition. Most SEO strategies combine short-tail head terms (for brand visibility) with long-tail keywords (for attainable traffic and conversions).
