Generic Domains (gTLD)
Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) are domain extensions that are not tied to a specific country, including traditional extensions like .com, .net, .org, and newer extensions like .tech, .store, and .blog introduced by ICANN's New gTLD Program launched in 2012. Unlike ccTLDs, gTLDs do not carry inherent geographic targeting signals for search engines.
gTLD selection is relevant to international SEO strategy: Google treats gTLDs neutrally in terms of geographic targeting unless configured otherwise in Google Search Console. SEOs use Ahrefs and SEMrush to compare domain authority and ranking potential across different gTLD choices.
