Hreflang Tag
The hreflang tag is an HTML link attribute (rel="alternate" hreflang="x") developed by Google to signal the language and geographic targeting of different versions of a webpage to search engines, helping them serve the correct regional version to users in different countries and language preferences. It is used in international SEO strategies.
Hreflang implementation is validated using the hreflang Tag Validator by Merkle, Screaming Frog's hreflang report, and Ahrefs' or SEMrush's international SEO audit features. Google Search Console's International Targeting report (legacy) flagged hreflang errors, and the URL Inspection tool shows how Google interprets alternate versions.
