Does ChatGPT use Reddit to recommend SaaS tools? For software-buying prompts, it rarely cites Reddit, and it may not search Reddit at all. Reddit still matters to SaaS buyers, but mostly somewhere else. Google's AI Overviews cite Reddit threads often, especially when someone asks for alternatives to a market leader. Prompts that ask what people think of a tool are a different case, and Reddit can enter there.

So forget gaming ChatGPT through Reddit. The better question is where your buyers ask for recommendations, and how you can be useful in those threads.

Key Takeaways

  • For software-buying prompts, ChatGPT cited no Reddit threads in our audit, and none of its 1,056 retrieved search results came from Reddit.
  • That doesn't mean Reddit is irrelevant to ChatGPT. Prompts asking what people think can pull Reddit in, and Reddit presence tracks with being named.
  • Google AI Overviews are where Reddit shows up for SaaS buyers: 12 of 21 answers cited it, and every "alternatives" answer did.
  • The cited threads were buyer questions in the communities of the people who use the tool, not founder forums.
  • Participate openly under real names. Undisclosed insider posts are astroturfing, and US rules restrict them.

What Did ChatGPT Do With Reddit on Software-Buying Prompts?

On the software-buying prompts we tested, ChatGPT left Reddit out entirely. None of its 25 answers cited a Reddit thread, and none of the 1,056 search results it retrieved came from Reddit. None of its searches targeted Reddit, either. Its sources were mostly vendors' own product, pricing, and docs pages, plus "best X" lists.

Google AI Overviews cited Reddit in more than half their answers. ChatGPT cited it in none.

Our audit of 25 software-buying prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews is described in our pillar guide to GEO for B2B SaaS. It covered five software categories in five prompt styles, with ChatGPT logged out and web search on.

Two terms matter here, because they measure different things. A citation is a source the answer links to. A retrieved result is a page that came back from ChatGPT's searches, whether or not the answer used it. ChatGPT retrieved 1,056 results across our prompts, and its answers carried 103 citations. Reddit was absent from both, which is a stronger finding than zero citations alone. A page can be retrieved and ignored. On these prompts, Reddit never got that far.

Before it answers, ChatGPT runs its own web searches, often called fan-out queries. None of its 90 fan-out searches on our prompts mentioned Reddit. It retrieved no forum pages of any kind, either: no Quora, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, or Stack Exchange results. For these prompts, forums weren't part of the pool it chose from.

That pattern fits the prompts. A question like "What is the best CRM software?" asks for a shortlist. Pages that state plans, prices, and features are a natural fit for that. We read this as ChatGPT treating these as fact-finding questions, where forum opinion had no obvious job to do.

Our data is one snapshot, logged out in the US, on buying-style prompts only, so it describes these prompts, not ChatGPT in general. That caveat matters, because the shape of a prompt seems to decide whether Reddit comes into play.

Discovered Labs captured ChatGPT's traffic on B2B SaaS prompts and found a likely reason. ChatGPT's dedicated Reddit source "fired on every prompt that asked for people's views or named a subreddit, and on no other prompt." Comparison and best-of prompts, such as "best CRM for a 10 person startup," didn't trigger it. It's vendor research, with its method only partly disclosed.

Does That Mean ChatGPT Ignores Reddit?

Zero Reddit citations on buying prompts doesn't mean ChatGPT ignores Reddit. Our prompts asked for the best tool, not for opinions. A buyer who asks what people think of a tool, or names a subreddit, is asking a different question. That question may get a different answer, with different sources behind it.

Our reading is that the two prompt types sit at different points in a purchase. Buying prompts come early, when someone wants a shortlist, like "best help desk software" or alternatives to a market leader. Opinion prompts tend to come later, closer to a decision. "Is this tool worth it?" and "What do people say about X vs Y?" ask about other people's experience. We didn't test opinion prompts, so treat this split as reasoning, not a finding.

There's a second reason to be careful. Our capture shows the web-search results ChatGPT retrieved and the sources it cited. If ChatGPT pulls Reddit through a separate channel, those pages may never appear in that search record. So "not retrieved in search" isn't proof that ChatGPT never read Reddit. It shows that Reddit played no visible part in these answers.

For a founder, the practical point is simpler. If ChatGPT isn't naming you on buying prompts, Reddit probably isn't the reason. Those answers leaned on vendors' own pages and on lists. Our guide to why ChatGPT isn't recommending your SaaS product covers the likelier causes and fixes.

Why Would Reddit Presence Still Matter for ChatGPT?

Reddit can shape a ChatGPT answer without being cited in it. A model may have learned about products from Reddit, a prompt may ask for opinions, or a cited page may summarize Reddit threads. So presence may matter even when citations are zero. Treat it as a sign of how widely people discuss you, not a lever.

The first route is training. Large language models learn from huge amounts of public text before anyone types a prompt, and public forums are part of the open web. We can't see what any model was trained on, so this is inference. Still, if thousands of practitioners discuss your product, that talk may shape what the model already "knows" about your category.

The second route is the prompt itself. When a buyer asks what people think, the answer is about reputation, and forums are where reputation gets written down. Our buying prompts couldn't show this, because they didn't ask for opinions. A founder who reads our zero as "Reddit doesn't matter" is looking at the wrong prompt type.

The third route is indirect. A "best X" roundup can quote or summarize Reddit discussion. If a list author checks what practitioners say before ranking tools, Reddit sentiment reaches the answer secondhand. The citation goes to the list, but the opinion came from the thread. We didn't measure how often this happens.

All three routes share one feature: none of them shows up as a Reddit link in the answer. That makes Reddit's influence hard to measure directly, and easy to overstate. Anyone selling a "Reddit for ChatGPT" package is selling a guess about routes that are hard to see from outside. A better test is whether Reddit presence and ChatGPT recommendations move together across many brands.

Position Digital tested this across 278 prompts in six B2B SaaS categories. Reddit presence, measured as the share of 141 crawled Reddit threads mentioning a brand, correlated with ChatGPT brand mentions at r = +0.57. Brands absent from Reddit averaged 4.6 mentions, against 15.2 for brands in 25% or more of threads. The authors call it "a small, directional study," and it tracks mentions, not citations.

Correlation isn't cause. Products that people discuss on Reddit are often the same ones that get listed and reviewed elsewhere. Any of those could drive the mentions, with Reddit riding along. So treat Reddit talk as a symptom of visibility more than a cause of it. Our breakdown of how AI engines decide which SaaS vendors to recommend covers the wider evidence.

Where Does Reddit Actually Shape SaaS Recommendations?

Reddit shapes SaaS recommendations most clearly in Google's AI Overviews. In our audit they cited Reddit in 12 of 21 answers, and in all 5 answers to "alternatives" prompts. The cited threads were buyer questions, posted in the subreddits where the tool's users work, rarely in founder communities.

Every alternatives prompt with an AI Overview drew a Reddit citation. Integration prompts had the lowest rate.

Across those answers, AI Overviews cited 17 Reddit threads from 14 subreddits. The r/devops community was cited three times and r/CRM twice. Every other subreddit appeared once, including r/Payroll, r/Accounting, r/QuickBooks, and r/grafana. Only one, r/startups, was a founder or startup community. Most of the rest were communities of the people who use or run the tool.

Almost every cited thread title asked for a recommendation or an alternative: "Salesforce Alternatives?", "ADP Alternatives", and "Best CRM for SAAS startup (B2B)?" By category, Reddit was cited in all 4 developer-monitoring answers and all 3 HR and payroll answers. Help desk was lowest, at 1 of 4.

Ranking on Google didn't guarantee a citation. Reddit held a top-3 organic slot on 20 of our 25 result pages, and on 17 of the 21 with an AI Overview. The Overview cited Reddit on 9 of those 17 pages, and on 3 of the 4 others. Just over half the cited threads, 9 of 17, were the same URL as a Reddit result ranking on that page.

Matching was also loose. For "best monitoring tool for a 15-person startup engineering team," one Overview cited an r/askmanagers thread about employee monitoring software. It looks like the word "monitoring" matched while the topic didn't. Check what Google cites for your prompts before you assume it's relevant.

Perplexity barely touched Reddit. It cited it once in 498 citations: an r/CRM thread on the best CRM for an early-stage, bootstrapped startup.

How to Show Up on Reddit Without Astroturfing

Find the Reddit threads Google already cites for your category, then join the communities your users belong to. Answer under your real name, say what your role is, and give honest comparisons, including when a rival fits better. Never seed threads, post as a fake customer, or pay for praise.

  1. Run your prompts on Google. Search "alternatives to" your market leader and "best X for Y," and note the threads each AI Overview cites.
  2. Go where your users work. Look for practitioner subreddits like r/devops, r/Payroll, or r/Accounting, not only r/SaaS. Read each community's rules before you post.
  3. Answer the question asked. Give trade-offs, and say when your product isn't the fit.
  4. Disclose who you are. Name your company and role in every reply.
  5. Let real customers speak. Invite them to share their experience where it's relevant, without scripts or rewards.
  6. Cover the lists as well. The same prompts pulled in "best X" and alternatives lists too. Our guide to getting your SaaS into the "best tools" lists AI engines cite covers them.

Astroturfing is the line not to cross: sock puppets, seeded threads, and staff posing as customers.

The FTC's final rule on fake reviews prohibits certain reviews and testimonials "written by company insiders." The rule turns on disclosure: it targets insider reviews that fail to "clearly and conspicuously disclose the giver's material connection to the business." That's a US rule, and this isn't legal advice.

We have no data on how AI engines treat astroturfed threads. That doesn't change the call: a planted answer puts your name next to a deception, in front of your buyers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT use Reddit to recommend SaaS tools?

Not on the software-buying prompts we tested. ChatGPT cited Reddit in 0 of 25 answers, and none of its 1,056 retrieved search results came from Reddit. Opinion prompts are different: according to Discovered Labs' research, ChatGPT's Reddit source fired on prompts asking for people's views.

Which AI engine cites Reddit most for software searches?

Google AI Overviews, by far. In our audit of 25 software-buying prompts, AI Overviews cited Reddit in 12 of 21 answers, including all 5 alternatives answers. Perplexity cited it once in 25 answers, and ChatGPT not at all.

Does being on Reddit help ChatGPT recommend my product?

Possibly, though the evidence is a correlation. According to Position Digital's study, Reddit presence correlated with how often ChatGPT named a brand, at r = +0.57. The authors call it small and directional, and it measures mentions, not citations. Products people discuss are often listed and reviewed more, too.

Which subreddits matter for SaaS in AI search?

The ones where your users work. Google AI Overviews cited 17 threads from 14 subreddits in our audit, such as r/devops, r/CRM, r/Payroll, and r/Accounting. Only one was a founder or startup community. Almost every thread asked for recommendations or alternatives.

Can my team post about our product on Reddit?

Yes, if you do it openly. Post under real names, say who you work for, and follow each community's rules. The FTC's rule on fake reviews prohibits certain undisclosed reviews and testimonials by company insiders. That's a US rule, so check what applies to you.

Conclusion

So, does ChatGPT use Reddit to recommend SaaS tools? On the buying prompts we tested, it didn't cite Reddit or retrieve any Reddit results. Google's AI Overviews cited it in 12 of 21 answers, including every alternatives answer. Reddit may still matter to ChatGPT in ways a citation count can't show, so be useful where buyers ask.
